Are Water Beads Toxic?

Yes, water beads can be toxic!

Ashley and Kipley Haugen discovered water beads can be toxic after Kipley was severely injured and poisoned by water beads in 2017. Testing from That Water Bead Lady, Consumer Reports, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have shown water beads can contain hazardous chemicals such as Acrylamide and BPA. 'Non-toxic' labeling can mislead caregivers and healthcare professionals. Not all water beads are non toxic, and all water beads can pose health risks to at risk groups!

"How can we effectively address and mitigate the hidden dangers of water  beads to ensure the safety and protection of our children?"

  • Strengthening Enforcement Against Hazardous Products: This involves passing legislation to prohibit the marketing and sale of water beads to children. Ensuring stricter compliance and safety standards, we can reduce the number of injury incidents associated with these products.
  • Collaborating with Retailers: Working closely with retailers is key. They need to commit to protecting their most vulnerable consumers, particularly children, by being selective about the products they stock and promoting safety awareness.
  • Learning from Affected Families: Accidents happen, and by learning from affected families, we transform these incidents into catalysts for change and harm reduction. The real-life experiences of families affected by product injuries are our most insightful data. Their stories deepen our understanding of product risks and are crucial in shaping strategies for safer product design and injury prevention. Listening to these families and connecting them with resources allows us to fully comprehend toy product hazards and their impacts. This knowledge equips us to take focused, informed actions to safeguard children's safety and well-being.
  • Reporting Product Injuries: Encouraging the reporting of any injuries or incidents related to water beads to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) helps in tracking the extent of the problem and can lead to more informed decision-making about product safety.
  • Raising Awareness: Educating the public about the dangers of water beads is crucial. This includes informing parents, caregivers, and children about the full risks of water bead ingestion, inhalation, and insertion, and the importance of not using water beads in spaces where children and pets visit and live.
  • Uniting in Efforts: When we all contribute, the effectiveness of safety measures is greatly magnified. Each person's efforts, no matter how small, collectively ensure successful outcomes.

No child's life should be tragically cut short or forever changed, because of a toy!
