A Historic Victory for Child Safety

Statement on the Water Bead Toys Rule

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Chairman Feldman for his leadership in advancing the water bead rule, and to the dedicated CPSC staff whose hard work has made this progress possible. I also want to thank the mothers who found the courage to share their children’s stories, and everyone who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with us in the fight to protect kids.

Since my daughter Kipley’s devastating injury, she and I have spent years as tireless advocates working to get these dangerous beads off the market. Determined to

ensure that no other child or family is forced to endure the pain and trauma we have faced. Every tear shed, every story told, and every fight endured has led us here…

Today is a historic victory for children and product safety. I intend to monitor the implementation of this life saving action and will remain a tireless advocate to ensure

water bead toys never show back up in the United States.

For Kipley, and every child’s right to grow up with safe toys,

Ashley Haugen

President of That Water Bead Lady

At present, our moral commitment to safety is hindered by weaknesses in legal, medical, and data systems, which ultimately leave our beloved children and pets vulnerable. However, amidst these challenges, there lies an opportunity to strengthen consumer safety by directly addressing these gaps.

Through fostering a culture of accountability, including scrutiny of product design, increasing reporting from healthcare professionals about product injuries, conducting thorough risk  assessments, and implementing stringent safety standards, we can significantly diminish the likelihood of hazardous products reaching the homes of consumers .

Help Us Protect Kids

With your support and donations, we can help inform the public and save lives! As a new non-profit, obtaining the funds to run an organization and obtain and produce the materials needed to grow and succeed in our mission can be very costly. We are asking for donations to assist in our efforts! Every penny counts and no donation is too small to help!

All donations support our education and advocacy to protect consumers and we are desperately seeking funding for:

  • Production of educational materials
  • Distribution of educational collateral to families, communities, healthcare professionals, therapy clinics, schools, and daycare facilities across the country
  • Digital outreach – website, email campaigns, newsletters and social media accounts are costly to manage and so important to inform the public. In the days of viral posts we need to ensure the information is getting out to as many people as possible to help raise awareness and protect from injury!
  • Legal costs to ensure consumer protection is placed in front of the right government officials to enact change!
  • Connecting resources to families in need! Water bead injuries are becoming more and more common, especially in children and pets. We connect families with resources and information in their time of need!
  • Consumer protection based activities – ensuring this topic is raised at every conference, convention, and on the hill where the decision makers are, through our organization and working with other consumer protection groups
