Ashley Haugen and Kipley’s physicians discovered water beads can be toxic, after Kipley was poisoned by water beads in 2017. Understandably, after Kipley's water bead injury our family's lives dramatically changed. What happened to Kipley has altered the trajectory of her life and devastated our family. I remember taking her to her first developmental pediatrician appointment hoping for a different outcome, hoping for a different answer, hoping they cold point me in the direction of an establish community that would welcome our darling girl and our family with open arms. Instead they gave me an answer that was difficult to hear, but I knew in my heart was true. Kipley was not only severely injured by water beads, she was poisoned.
Since 2017, my husband Jonathan and our daughter's Abigail & Kipley, I have had one core mission - use our experience to prevent this tragedy from happening to others. As a family we decided to start That Water Bead Lady, a non profit dedicated to helping family's navigate life after product injury. Even though talking about what happened to our family is painful, we know we are saving lives by spreading the knowledge we wish we had in 2017.
Not only has That Water Bead Lady become an invaluable resource for families, physicians, and communities in the wake of water bead injury, but it has also become a trusted authority in the areas of harm prevention, toy product injury, and dangerous consumer products more generally. No one’s family member should be hurt irrevocably because of want for fun. In the unfortunate event that something bad does happen, we are proud to help ensure you are not left to navigate on your own.
My name is Ashley Haugen, I am a 32 year-old mother of two. Prior to Kipley's water bead injury, I was a budding web and graphic designer poised to really jump deep into my career. After living through the unimaginable with our daughter, things had to change.
We have been a one income family, through Jonathan’s full-time employment, for some time now, so that I can be Kipley's primary caregiver and navigate her academic and medical needs, and help her navigate how to understand the world as she perceives it via her own developmental process post toxic brain encephalopathy diagnosis. Because I am handling the daily operations of That Water Bead Lady and our family has been solely footing all the costs, we need funding for us to continue to produce brochures, send mail to relevant parties, host our website and as we ramp up activity with exposure, hire on the help to run the organization so I can focus my efforts on outreach.
We are looking for financial and in-kind assistance support to help us carry out this important work. To contribute financially, click here. For those who have in-lieu-of services (aka donate your services) to our cause such as legal, printing, advertising, PR, web & seo, or something you think might be helpful, please reach out directly via our email thatwaterbeadlady@gmail.com.
Thank you.
