Ashley Haugen and her daughter‘s physicians discovered water beads can be toxic in 2017, after Kipley Haugen was poisoned by water beads. Understandably, after Kipley's water bead injury their family's life dramatically changed and this experience inspired them to take action.

That Water Bead Lady become an invaluable resource for families, physicians, and communities in the wake of water bead injury, and a trusted authority in the areas of harm prevention, toy product injury, and impact focused advocacy messaging. No one’s family member should be hurt irrevocably because of want for fun. In the unfortunate event of a product injury, we take pride in being here to assist you.
"While we can all agree adult supervision is essential, depending on it as the sole layer of protection against childhood consumer product injury, is like using a single soldier to guard a castle against a siege. It's not enough. Multiple layers of protection are needed to guard against the hazards children can face participating in play, the occupation of childhood. And it’s not just the responsibility of parents to keep them safe - companies must step up and prioritize safety in their product design, and quality of their manufacture. Because the reality is -accidents happen and in those moments the design and chemical composition of a product can make the critical difference between a minor mishap and a major tragedy. "

My name is Ashley Haugen, I am a 32 year-old mother of two amazing daughters Abigail and Kipley. My husband Jonathan and I have been married for 14 years. Prior to Kipley's water bead injury, I was a budding web and graphic designer poised to really jump deep into my career. But after living through the unimaginable with our daughter Kipley, things had to change. Kipley needed me and navigating life after product injury was extremely challenging, overwhelming, and lonely.
When Kipley was around 4, we were in a store, casually walking down an aisle and happened upon a mother with a young toddler in her cart. As I turned to glance at them, I noticed the mother had a package of water beads in her hands. When I looked down at Kipley my heart sank. Her big brown eyes were wide with fear, she was so scared, but with her tiny trembling voice she looked at me and uttered two words that carry immense weight - "Friend safe". I gave Kipley a knowing smile, walked up to the other mom and shared Kipley's story. Relief and joy washed over Kipley's face as the mom put the water beads back on the shelf and went on to select a Lego set both Kipley and her little one approved of.
Kipley's dream is for children to be safe from water beads. So we started That Water Bead Lady to make her dream a reality and keep as many friends safe as we can.
Our family is a one income one car household, we've made sacrifices so I can stay home and devote my time to caring for my girls and handling the daily operations of That Water Bead Lady. Every dollar donated to our non profit goes directly to furthering our mission and helping families. Our non profit is supported by donations (including sometimes donations from our out to eat budget). I am incredibly grateful for the community we have built and continue to build.
